Overview

About this journey

Shey Phoksundo Lake — the deepest lake in Nepal at 145 metres, the colour of glacier melt, surrounded by Bon Buddhist villages that look unchanged since the 15th century. This is the most accessible Dolpo trek, a tea-house route that doesn't require camping.

Why this trek

  • Lower Dolpo permit only — significantly cheaper than the Upper Dolpo restricted-area permit.
  • Tea-house accommodation throughout — no camping equipment required.
  • Max altitude 3,733 m. Reasonable for any healthy adult.
  • Visits Ringmo village (the setting of the film Himalaya) and the ancient Bon Buddhist gompa above the lake.

Dolpo trekking sits in the rain shadow north of Dhaulagiri, so this is the right trek for the monsoon months when most of Nepal is wet. We run this route from May through October — peak season here is the opposite of the Khumbu.
