Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal — 10 km² of clear water at 2,990 m, surrounded by pine forest and snow-capped peaks in Mugu district. The classic approach is on foot from Jumla over the Khali Lagna pass, 12 days of walking through farmland, pine forest, and high pastures.
Why this trek
- Lake-focused trek — three nights camping at the lake's edge with Rara National Park as the surrounding wilderness.
- Max altitude 3,700 m. Moderate altitude profile.
- Walks through Khas-Magar villages — far-western hill culture distinct from anywhere else in Nepal.
- Fly in via Nepalgunj-Jumla, fly out via Talcha-Nepalgunj. No long road drives.
One of our favourite far-west treks. The lake itself is the destination — three full days there, walking the perimeter and birdwatching.
