Overview

About this journey

Lapchi is a Buddhist hermitage at 3,600 m, sacred to followers of Milarepa — the 11th-century Tibetan yogi who meditated in caves throughout this valley. The trek climbs from Bigu Gompa into the upper Lapchi Valley, visiting active hermitages and meditation caves still in use.

Why this trek

  • Eight days, max altitude 3,600 m. Friendlier than most Rolwaling-region treks.
  • Cultural and spiritual depth — Lapchi is a working pilgrimage site, not a museum.
  • Bigu Gompa, a nunnery founded in 1928, is the starting point.
  • Sees almost no foreign trekkers — fewer than fifty per year on this route.

For trekkers interested in living Buddhist culture more than peak views. We can arrange teachings with hermits-in-residence on request.
